As part of a major reorganisation of its operational systems, Birmingham Airport required 300 existing analogue cameras and security subsystems to be centralised and expanded. In just four months, ATEC integrated an extensive CCTV-over-IP network with centralised security management controls for all airport intelligence.
About Birmingham Airport
In 70 years Birmingham Airport has grown into the third largest UK airport outside of London, with 34 airlines now flying over eight million customers to over 60 destinations. Plans to merge two terminals into one required a major reorganisation of operational systems, and this included upgrading security.
Expanding the CCTV network, centralising numerous security systems and control centres, and working with the West Midlands Police, Counter Terrorism Unit and UK Border Agency were on the agenda.
Project Challenges
From Christmas, ATEC designed and integrated an IP network and complex security management system ready for a month-long transition period starting in March 2010. To prevent security risks, it needed to work in tandem with the existing system and required ‘site acceptance’ testing to illustrate its stability before the April ‘switch over’.
The challenge was to expand the CCTV system from 300 to 420 cameras, and integrate multiple disparate systems such as Fire Detection, Fire Suppression, Access Control and Environmental Monitoring.
