WAN Security

WAN FEATURES

When you need connectivity between site across third-party property, and wireless isn’t an option you need to a carrier network (such as BT’s). Carriers have introduced innovative mechanisms to make circuits more widely affordable, with impacts on performance which need to be understood and then avoided or managed.

ASYMETRIC CONNECTIONS AND CONTENTION

Asymetric is the “A” in ADSL, the difference between the downstream and upstream bandwidth (usually lower). A network connection created across the internet between two such connections always operates at the (lower) upstream speed with important ramifications for CCTV.

At the exchange bandwidth may be shared with up to 50 other users. This is called contention and is why you are unlikely to achieve headline internet speeds much of the time. Understanding the impact of contention is crucial in designing for streaming services such as video and voice. We offer uncontended ADSL circuits at competitive rates.

LEASED LINES

Leased lines are provisioned over fibre rather than copper, come with a 6 hour SLA and are normally uncontended. Leased lines have become much more affordable in the last few years and are now a viable option.

VIRTUAL PRIVATE NETWORKS (vpnS)

Every organisation’s data is sensitive to some degree and sending it across an unsecured network is not advisable. A VPN is a secure tunnel which can be created across the internet (internet VPN) or a carrier’s network (private VPN)

A VPN allows a network to be constructed using inexpensive point connections, either to the internet or to a carrier’s private network. VPNs can be managed by the carrier, by us, or by you the customer depending on requirements.
